Jane Mackarness has been studying and practicing yoga for 38 years, teaching since 1979, and training teachers since 1997. Based in Devon, UK, she offers prenatal workshops in the UK and abroad. Jane is the author of this course, which has been running since 2005 and now has over 100 graduates worldwide. She has two children and two grandchildren, Harry and Isla.
Jane’s first introduction to yoga was at the age of 13, when her mother Ruth attended classes with the great B K S Iyengar, in London in 1966. Ruth loved the classes and Iyengar gave her his book, Light on Yoga, signed and dedicated, with notes advising her on postures and modifications. When Ruth died in 1967, Jane inherited this treasure and comforted herself by practicing yoga. This wonderful inheritance, and the good fortune to study with great teachers, provides inspiration 40 years on, as her love for yoga continues to deepen.
On moving to Devon in 1973, Jane studied yoga for four years at The Centre for Human Communication with the highly respected Kevin and Venika Kingsland, an Anglo-Indian couple who taught classical hatha yoga and integral yoga. She then studied for the British Wheel of Yoga Diploma with Jenni Adams and started teaching in 1979.

Jane has studied and practised different styles of yoga, but favours and teaches classical hatha yoga. Her classes emphasise breath awareness, alignment and safely extending and opening the body to release deep tension and stress. This style of yoga is gentle but extremely dynamic, encouraging the body and mind to let go of old patterns and habits and welcome new ones that make you feel very good! Every class includes postures (asanas), breathwork (pranayama), relaxation and laughter
The bottom line is that yoga works, and anyone, regardless of age or fitness, can experience ease of body and peace of mind by practising regularly.
One size does not fit all everyone benefits from individual attention, so Jane’s classes are small; she offers beginners and intermediate yoga to groups and specialises in prenatal yoga. She also offers one-to-one tuition and yoga therapy.
Jane was Yoga Tutor and Head of Studies at the Kevala Centre for several years and is the author of Pre and Postnatal Yoga, co-author of Yoga for Fitness Professionals and co-producer of a Sanskrit pronunciation CD. She is available for workshops both in the UK and abroad.
Jane is a Senior Teacher with UK Yoga Alliance, an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT) with the US Yoga Alliance, qualified by the Yoga Alliance to conduct Teacher Training and Continuing Education training. She has several thousand hours teaching and training experience, is a Yoga Elder with the Independent Yoga Network, a Professional Member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT), a Reiki Master and a Classical Homeopath, qualifying with Misha Norland at the Devon School of Homeopathy in 1987.

Jane dropped in to one of Amanda’s classes in Adelaide when visiting her family; it was the best session she had attended for a long time. The meeting was one of those wonderful lucky coincidences, as Jane had been looking for a highly qualified and experienced teacher to tutor Australian perinatal student teachers for a couple of years.
