The Benefits of Fertility Yoga

Opting to use holistic fertility methods such as yoga allows couples to do everything they possibly can to increase the odds of conceiving naturally. However, if they are unsuccessful, they will both be in much better shape to withstand the demands of Infertility treatments like IVF and IUI, which are physically, emotionally and financially demanding.

Fertility yoga is designed to increase fertility by offering a number of physical and mental health benefits, including:
Improved physical health

Fertility yoga helps to improve physical health, thereby increasing the likelihood of getting pregnant. Regular practice (at least 4 times a week is recommended) will quickly achieve the following: -

tone and strengthen the muscles that support the reproductive organs

better alignment

release of stress and toxins from the muscles and joints

improved circulation, allowing vital nutrients and oxygen to reach the reproductive system

increase in energy and stamina

strengthen immunity and encourage detoxification

improve the quality of rest and sleep

guide the body towards homeostasis and healthy choices

restore hormone balance, regulate menstruation and improve ovulation

A calmer mind

Regular yoga practice: -

releases stress from the mind as well as the body

promotes deep breathing which calms the mind

reduces anxiety by learning simple relaxation techniques

reminds people to focus on positive thoughts and feelings

Improved relationships

Yoga can also help to improve relationships – studies show partners who practice yoga together learn to communicate better, both verbally and non-verbally. They also learn to relax, focus on their inner selves, and spend more quality time together, which can help to reduce the emotional stress of timed intercourse and introduce more passion and fun into sex.

Knowing that both partners are actively working towards their desired outcome, creating a child, makes a big difference; working as a team encourages mutual support, so the woman is less likely to experience feelings of isolation and inadequacy.

Stress and anxiety

Stress can be a huge barrier to conception; longing for a baby and being unable to conceive can become an all-consuming anxiety. This often creates a vicious circle and results in loss of sexual spontaneity, poor communication between partners and financial concerns.

The medical community has conducted little research into the ideal mind-body connection for conception, but results indicate that many couples simply need to relax. Practicing yoga to encourage fertility does not guarantee conception, but it does offer a safe and holistic way to develop a strong, healthy mind and body, thereby creating the best possible chance of conception.

Fertility yoga follows the basic principles of yoga and combines them with specific postures designed to aid the reproductive organs, thereby increasing the chance of pregnancy. The focus on relaxation, pranayama and restorative postures enhances the health of both mind and body.

Does fertility yoga work?

Harvard Medical School analyzed rates of conception in women who attended fertility “retreats”, which included regular practice of fertility yoga. Compared to a control group, women who practiced fertility yoga were twice as likely to get pregnant after a year of trying. However, the researchers admit it is not clear whether the fertility yoga was the cause of these increased rates.

Studies show that fertility yoga is more likely to reduce personal stress related to infertility, and is more likely to improve personal health and sense of control, which contribute to improved fertility. Anyone who practices yoga regularly and correctly will, without doubt, enjoy improved overall health.
